I came to Schwarzerblitz for Evilobster, and I stayed for Mono.
Bravo on this design and backstory
A character I made for the Schwarzerblitz character contest. Bio: Once a fashionista with an interest in martial arts, Kunimitsu Mishima was a former star of the Japanese fashion world. However, the huge amount of stress and anxiety that came from the job led to her becoming addicted to anti-depressants, which had the side effect of an extremely increased appetite. Due to the ensuing weight gain, Kunimitsu’s popularity took a nosedive, and her career as a famous fashion model came to an end. Somber, but not defeated, She decided to pursue a new path in martial arts. After creating a new fighting style that mixed ninjitsu and sumo wrestling techniques, Kunimitsu became a professional martial artist under the stage name “Mono”. She hopes to return to her former career one day, and become a leader in plus-size fashion. As for how she would play, I guess it would be like a mixture of Kunimitsu and Ganryu from Tekken 2.

sometimes i feel mean for thinking this but every time i see an indie fighting game that’s like trying to innovate fgs in a way that’s like trying to make people who don’t like fgs get into them i think it’s a waste of time and resource. most of the time the idea of “there should be a game like this” is what dictates the projects instead of “i want to make a game like this” and they just have the most uninspired and derivative characters of all time.
schwarzerblitz is an indie game i freaking love that is clearly just the author trying to show off his little universe of characters that he really likes and cares about and the best way he found to make that interactible was through this tekken 2/soul calibur 2 mixed kinda game even if he doesn’t have the best 3D artist skills to compete with anything
idol showdown was a huge surprise cause it also feels dictated by character love and its advanced mechanics aren’t scared of pushing away newcomers who might not like fighting games. if you don’t like this game you just don’t and you go play something else, it’s free afterall so they dont actually have any obligation to appeal to anyone outside the fg/vtuber interest venn diagram, if they fish anyone who was only in one of these circles (me) it’s a bonus

HUNDRED GAME KUMITE project, day 15! Played a bunch of interesting games in this session! They were...
King of Fighters 2002 UM (fighting the computer, playing some Mai, King, Nameless, K’, Andy) -- KOF sprites and animations and music are just a treasure.
Them’s Fightin’ Herds (little bit of story mode, but also online matches with Paprika the Alpaca! Undefeated so far in online??)
KILLER INSTINCT (2013). I love this game so much. Characters are incredible, sound design is overwhelmingly hype, and the online. THE ONLINE IN KILLER INSTINCT IS SO GOOD. (online ranked matches with SHADOW JAGO -- some of these I got bopped by strong players, but I won some too!)
Schwarzerblitz!! This game is extremely indie. Very free, charming, low-budget 3D game. Difficulty is quite high, fighting the computer (lots of losing in arcade mode with Tiger and Mono)
Gang Beasts -- turns out there’s not much to do in single player, and there’s online but no matchmaking :-( But it’s super cute.
Fantasy Strike! Another game with incredibly good online. Rollback, fast matchmaking, cross-play. (ranked matches with Valerie/Grave/Geiger)
Also, while I was streaming Fantasy Strike, some Fantasy Strike community members came into the chat to say hi. It was super nice.
11 games to go.

100 game kumite: mission complete
I streamed 100 different fighting games, finishing up last night. Please see the "hundred game kumite" tag on my blog for all the vods.
What did I learn?
Fighting games are really fun. Still. It’s a joy to fight other people, it’s a joy to stream and have friends come through.
Most of the people who came through, to be totally honest, were my IRL friends, and that was a great emotional boost. I’ve been lonely since quarantine started and I wish I could see them. There were some local FGC people who supported the endeavor too, either by encouraging me or showing up in the stream. Also a few random Twitch folks came through just due to the game I was streaming at the time.
Remarkably few Tumblr folks. Step it up, Tumblr folks :-O
My lovely wife was really supportive of the project <3 <3 She tried being a co-commentator one evening, but she decided to just make that a one-time thing.
Surprises finding online matches -- some games more active than you’d think, others less so
Some games that I would have thought would have active online scenes, I couldn’t find any matches! The new Samurai Shodown game, for example -- when I tried at least, no matches! Dead Or Alive 6 seemed dead; no good. Fighting EX Layer was empty when I tried it. Several more games too.
Games that I was happily surprised to get online matches: Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, Tekken 6, Vampire Savior, Mortal Kombat 2 and UMK3 (all on PS3!) -- and Dead Or Alive 5 LR on PS4, it was still going down! Despite its successor not having any matches going. And the Steam version of Melty.
Also the “online arcade” mode in Super Turbo (in the SF Anniversary Collection) was quite active, and that was a bunch of fun.
Where did I mess up?
I had a few snafus getting some games going, either in general (input issues with Steam games, one time when I forgot my laptop was running Folding@Home), or particularly with my two-monitor stream setup. I could have done a better job making sure the games for the night were configured correctly before starting the stream.
Also, I probably did too many versions of Street Fighter II.
I FORGOT GAROU: MARK OF THE WOLVES, WHAT THE HECK. Somehow I never wrote it down in the planning spreadsheet?? That would have been way better than, say, yet another version of SFII, or Gang Beasts, which is a fine game, but turns out not to have any single-player content.
What do we want to do in the future as a result of this?
Keep playing fighting games.
This series really renewed my love for KOF, Virtua Fighter, Darkstalkers and Killer Instinct; I want to git gud at a KOF game, VF5:FS, Vampire Savior, and KI 2013. Also I would really love to understand Fighting Vipers more. That game is super charming.
Aaaahhhhh maaaaan. And Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2. Maybe I’ll dig into GG Strive.
There are so many good fighting games in the world.
Thanks for reading <3

Wild Combatants Add Silliness to 90’s Fighter ‘Schwarzerblitz’
Evil lobsters in swimsuits. A raptor with a minigun. Some sort of dog with a biohazard coat. Schwarzerblitz doesn’t always take its roster too seriously.
Schwarzerblitz aims to take players back to the early days of 3D fighters with its low-poly action and its sense of humor with its characters. The game offers some ridiculous combatants with its minigun-toting raptors who are more than happy to bring a gun to a fistfight. That silliness doesn’t mean they’re any less dangerous, though, each having a suite of combos they can put together to lay beatdowns. Some characters are downright amazing as well. Cyphr doesn’t have any arms but will happily kick you to a pulp. Which is AWESOME.
The game’s focus on an older visual style doesn’t mean that its combat hasn’t taken some modern inspirations, boasting some clever stuff with its combo system. Expect to juggle your opponent with its five-button attack system, but don’t expect them to just sit there and take it. The game offers a Trigger system that allows you to cancel a hitstun, helping you get back on your feet when comboed. That same Trigger will also break a guard if you need it to, opening up opportunities when you need them. Both of these can make for major turnabouts and some tense matches.
Schwarzerblitz has a suite of characters, many different stages to fight them in, and an extensive story that will steadily tie together the various character endings you can see in arcade mode. It’s silly, yet offers a deep combo/counter system that should have most fighting game fans smiling.
